This Lent we will explore the traditional meanings of gluttony, pride, lust, and other "Seven Deadly Sins." Yes, this is a little controversial. People already think that Christians talk too much about sin, and that talking about sin makes us "judgemental". As a result, contemporary culture trivializes the "seven deadly sins," as if they're "no big deal." Does the concept of sin still have relevance? These vices have shaped our culture today more than we realize, and they have also become rooted in our own hearts. Our hearts were designed to enjoy a full and forever happiness, not the pitiful temporary pleasures for which we’re too prone to settle. Pride, envy, anger, duplicity, greed, gluttony, and lust are woefully inadequate substitutes for the wonder, beauty, and affection of God. They will rob us, not ravish us. They will numb us, not heal us. They will slaughter us, not save us. This Lent we'll take an honest look at the controversial topic of sin and embrace the life-giving path of God.
