Sermon Audio: Canon R. Hurkmans
Hunter Muileboom & Felisha Sassano:
The word Christian is a very muddy word: it can mean just about anything you want it to mean, and a lot of people have baggage about what it means to "be Christian". Fortunately for all of us, the word "Christian" only appears three times in the Bible. It turns out that the earliest followers of Jesus never referred to themselves as Christians: they had another word, a better word: Disciple. What is a disciple? It is simply this: a student of Jesus. But wait: if disciples are students of Jesus, then that means the church is (yep, you guessed it) the school of Jesus. Have you ever thought of church that way? Today as we continue our series "Vital Signs", let's explore why it is so important for us to be a church that is a School of Jesus, a church that pursues Training for Discipleship.
Canon Robert Hurkmans has been the minister at St. James and St. Brendan since 2006.
