Sermon Audio: Canon R. Hurkmans
"Jesus Take the Wheel Vine"
A "Check Engine" light on your dashboard is not a good sign. Your car may sound fine and it may look fine, but that warning light tells us that despite the outward appearance of your car, something is wrong. So too in the Christian life: it is possible to maintain a wonderful outward appearance as a follower of Christ, while beneath the surface our hearts are cold and our passion is gone. In John 6 many disciples chose to leave Jesus and stop following him. Why? They had all the appearance of true disciples. What made them turn back? Today we discover that in order for us to truly follow Jesus we need to surrender ourselves fully to him: hand over the keys and let him behind the wheel. As difficult as this may sound, it is what separates true disciples from false disciples.
Canon Robert Hurkmans was the priest at St. James and St. Brendan from 2006 to 2018.
