Matthew doesn't tell us about shepherds filled with good news. Matthew doesn't bother with imperial politics or mangers filled with straw or inns with no vacancy. Instead Matthew shows us the messy, embarrassing, sordid, complicated, and disappointing parts of Jesus' family tree. And yet, this baby is Emmanuel, God-with-us, God-for-us, as one of us, in the flesh. This means there is hope for all of us and hope for every family on earth!

From the time Moses encountered God in the burning bush, there has been one name above all names that God has used to refer to himself: YHWH - the unspeakable name of Yahweh. No Jew would take this name on their lips, and even to write it out in its entirety was forbidden. So what on earth was Jesus thinking when he declared "Before Abraham was, I AM?" It's not wonder they immediately picked up stones to kill him. This Sunday we conclude our "I Am" series with a look at Jesus most outrageous I Am statement ever: "I Am the I Am."

Bread is one of those basic things that everybody needs. When Jesus says: "I Am the Bread" he is saying at least three things: He's bread for our hungry minds, bread for our hungry bodies, and bread for our hungry souls.

In the catacombs of Rome you will find early Christian artwork depicting Jesus as a shepherd. For these first Christians the image of Jesus as a good shepherd was a source of strength and consolation. Today this image is still powerful and comforting. Many of us, like sheep, find ourselves lost or in danger, we've wandered and we need help and protection. We need a shepherd! This Sunday we contemplate Jesus' famous (and meaningful word): I Am the Good Shepherd.
